"In fact, if the child is not provided with stimulation, he will create stimulation by acting out or disrupting his environment in some way. Again, this is not being done for any negative reason. He is creating excitement because he needs it." -Unknown
I have a high-energy class of 25 seconds graders. My class is a very active learning environment with students who require different needs.
I believe in my school's philosophy that it is my job to do whatever it takes for every child to be successful every day and that means differentiated instruction to better fit their individual needs. In second grade, our students are getting used to being in their seats for longer periods of time and being focused on one given assignment. Some second graders are extra active and need to be moving, sitting in a seat for a given period of time is difficult for them. The movements of these students can cause distractions to those around them. Having extra tools to help with my fidgety friends will be a great help!
My Project
We will use these 3 ball chairs in place of the students' chairs at their desk during the day and during reading centers. The notion behind the exercise ball is that it allows students an outlet for their constant movement, keeping them focused, without distracting students around them. This way, students feel much more in control. They feel like it's their option to bounce, and they do not have to sit perfectly still and feel confined. Many second graders are still learning to sit in their seats for longer periods of time. A 2008 study found that children actually need to move to focus during a complicated mental task. The children in the study, fidgeted more when a task required them to store and process information rather than just hold it. These ball chairs are a great solution to provide all students with an outlet for their extra energy.
When students are constantly moving and fidgeting it hinders the learning environment of those around them.
The 3 ball chairs will not only help my students who struggle to sit still, but will also allow the students around them to be able to better focus. The chairs will enhance our learning environment by eliminating distractions from others while still allowing movement for those that need it.
