Act It Out! Retelling Nursery Rhymes And Stories Using Props
My students need story retelling kits and puppets to strengthen their summarizing skills and make up their own stories using the components of the kits.
Imagine that you are 5 years old and you've just heard the story of the Little Red Hen for the first time. Now, your teacher asks you to retell the story. Won't that be much easier if you have little animal puppets to help in your retelling?
Our school is located just outside of a military base in a low-income area of Virginia.
We have many children who move in and out of our district's schools frequently. I have a class full of the most incredible five and six-year-olds ever. They inspire me and make me laugh every day. The vast majority of my students receives free or reduced priced lunch and lives in single parent households. Only a few of my students participate in the home reading program. Many of their parents don't have the time to read at home. In my classroom I provide all of the inspiration to make reading and learning to read fun. I incorporate activities in our plans everyday to keep the students up and moving and engaged. Acting and storytelling is always a big part of our day.
My Project
I am requesting story-retelling puppets because my students need the support of concrete objects to help them with their retelling skills. They will also be able to use the puppets and objects in the kits to make up their own stories and act them out. My students love being silly and acting out their own stories. After they use the concrete objects in these kits and the puppets to make up their own stories, they will be able to transfer those stories to writing the books that we work on in our Writer's Workshop.
I would love to be able to extend our writing projects by giving them to opportunity to make up their own stories and act them out using the puppets and other items in these kits. My students love the spotlight and they certainly enjoy telling their stories. I am sure they will love using the puppets to be on stage and entertain their audience with their stories. We will be partnering with a 1st grade class who will be our audience for our stories.
I was surprised when I was working with my students last year and I discovered that some of them had not heard some of the classic stories like 3 Billy Goats Gruff and Little Red Hen.
Of course we dove right in and read many new - to - them stories. I know that retelling these stories will be easier for my students if they have concrete manipulatives on hand., Acting out stories is always fun having the animals on hand will make story time much more engaging. Oh, the fun we will have!
