Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
About 150 6th, 7th, 8th graders walk into the art room that is filled with art materials, art pictures, words about art: on the walls, ceiling and windows. They have this room for them to create, be creative, imaginative for 50 minutes a day. They can pour out their thoughts and passion with pictures.
The students that are in the art class can be little sixth graders that are barely out of elementary school and unsure of themselves with the big 7th and 8th graders.
Art class is their first time being in an art program. They are 90% eligible for free and reduced lunches. Not having art in elementary school is a real disadvantage for them and having art in middle school is a treat.
There are 8th graders that have elected to have art for 3 years in a row because they like a class that is primarily about being creative. Then there are the 7th graders that are the middle child in art classes though those that are in the art classes are serious about themselves as artists. This mix of students share an enriching art experience in a school that supports art and a district that supports art. With Donors Choose, we get a community that supports art and the art program.
One thing each student in the art program shares is a love of drawing in their sketchbooks with a pencil and pen.
My Project
I am requesting 190 sketchbooks to draw in every day. The resources I am requesting is a sketchbook for each student in the art program. The art program has advanced art class, 6th grade art class, semester art, ceramics and computer art. Each of the classes starts out working in their sketchbooks each day. The district does not give enough money to buy sketchbooks for each student and the parents can't afford something like that. I have supplied mini sketchbooks in the past but kids want to work in bigger sketchbooks.
Each project they do I requires them to think and draw out their ideas in their sketchbooks. They show me their sketches and then start in clay or watercolors or posters for example. I take a picture of their best sketch each week and put it on Artsonia, a student web museum and each student has a digital portfolio of sketches and final projects.
They will keep their sketchbooks and hopefully work on them at home after the class is over. Students are free to draw whatever they want in their sketchbook.
Having a sketchbook of their own to keep is a wonderful gift for them to use at school and follow through at home.
A book with blank pages for students to fill with drawings from their imagination. Using their imagination, developing their imagination, thinking about possibilities is a job skill/training for the work force.
Sketchbooks worked in every day at the beginning of class, where students are drawing about themselves, their ideas and thoughts builds up their self esteem and confidence.
