This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
"One of the most powerful ways to engage students is to let them take charge of their own learning." -Eric Jensen, Teaching with Poverty in Mind
My students live and learn in a high poverty neighborhood of Detroit.
They come to school with various social, emotional, and academic needs. Before any learning takes place this upcoming school year, these basic needs must be met. A classroom carpet will create a space where children can feel safe, socialized, and accepted. The individual sections will help my students self-monitor their behavior and redirect their energy towards learning.
My Project
My students need a mobile storage cart to make book selections and book bins to keep leveled texts for an exciting area to develop the love of reading.
Assigning carpet spots will create structure, foster friendships, and help behavior management. Classroom management will be smoother and transitions will be quicker, allowing for more powerful teaching to take place. Less time will be spent correcting behaviors, and more time will be spent learning.
Donations to this project will help our classroom become a safe and welcoming place to learn and build positive relationships.
My students will feel empowered to self-direct their behavior and fully engage in our classroom community.
