A Picture Paints a Thousand Science Words (part 2)

My Students

Are there many better ways to remember something or an experience than taking a picture or a video? There must not be, because we all do this all of the time. Most of our social media is based, at least in some part, on pictures and video (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, etc..). Images speak to us.

My school is in South Carolina.

Overall, approximately 70% of my students are African American, 20% are Hispanic, and 10% are White. They all come from a variety of backgrounds and cultures. Over 90% of my students are from a low SES (high poverty) environment, but they are very intelligent, bright, and curious learners. Given the opportunity to reach high expectations, they will seldom disappoint! I teach science, and in my classroom I get to teach four classes a day full of scientific minds! Every day is an adventure, and the students I get to go on each adventure with are amazing!

My Project

Hands-on experiences take learning and understanding to the next level. The key is allowing the hands-on activities to reinforce what has been taught and challenging students to apply the content in a real and/or novel way. However, there is something that has a larger effect on long-term learning than just "doing" activities, and that is language/vocabulary. Hands-on is easy in Science, but getting the vocabulary to sink in is the opposite of easy! I have a big idea for this school year that will mix hands-on and language/vocabulary together into a learning combo that I think will have long-lasting benefits for my students. I need your help, though. I need cameras and memory cards to implement my idea! The idea is simple. I want to use the power of pictures and videos to constantly reinforce learning and vocabulary in class. My students love social media, and I want to use the power of social media. The students will take pictures and videos to demonstrate vocabulary.

Vocabulary is vital to learning and proving that learning has occurred.

Science is a subject that is tied to its vocabulary. My students need new ways to approach and apply vocabulary. The hands-on experience of the challenge of demonstrating vocabulary through pictures and videos will push my students to the next level of Science understanding. They need this chance to do this.
