My Students

How can a teacher teach 2 different groups of 6 kids in 40 minutes when the classroom is located on the opposite side of the school? This seems like an impossible task when trying to maximize instruction.

With a poverty rate above 30%, Buffalo, NY is the third poorest city in the country.

Many of my students do not have books in their homes which puts them at a disadvantage right from the beginning. Unfortunately, high schools in the Buffalo Public Schools only have a graduation rate around 50%. It is our goal to increase literacy skills at an early age to combat this startling statistic. Our school is working hard to make sure that students act and learn the "Wright Way." We have created an environment where excellence is an expectation and education is our highest priority!

My Project

This year, we have decided to focus our collective energies on boosting literacy instruction in the critical years: kindergarten, first grade, and second grade. The reading periods for these classes are very short and there are a lot of students who need small group instruction. This is where I come in but unfortunately, my room is across the school from where these classrooms are located. So I face an impossible choice, do I waste valuable instructional time walking groups back and forth from their home room to my room or do I bring everything down to them? I will be using the cart, dry erase easel, and paper trays with lids to create a mobile classroom for my students. I plan on bringing all materials to them so that I can quickly pull small groups and return them to their classrooms with minimal instructional time lost.

5-10 minutes can either be wasted or spent teaching?

I believe that a lot can be accomplished in 5-10 minutes and that is why I will be putting my room on a cart. I will bring textbooks, pens, paper, scissors, glue, and everything else we need! All the kids will need to bring with them is a positive attitude and a willingness to learn. With your donation, I will be able to handle all of the other logistics.
