My students need a class set of this amazing literary experience, including two copies in Spanish and one in French, to allow ESL students to also read along.
My 11th and 12th graders work long hours after school and participate in extracurricular activities, and that leaves little time for entertainment or activities that foster their imaginations. This can be the year that magic happens. With one book, creativity and a love for reading can come alive.
I teach 148 11th and 12th grade students in a high poverty area.
Our school is situated in a small, rural community, and is designated as 100% free and reduced lunch. My students are incredibly kind, hard working, motivated, and supportive of one another. However, the books and technology they use at school are often the only exposure they receive to such materials. My students deserve access to unique and imaginative materials and the experience of reading truly classic books that offer them a peek at life in the world beyond our community.
My Project
I would like to provide my classroom with a set of the book, "The Invention of Hugo Cabret" by Brian Selznick. This text is truly unique: the author himself describes it as, "a 550 page novel in words and pictures. But unlike most novels, the images in my new book don't just illustrate the story; they help tell it. I've used the lessons I learned from...masters of the picture book to create something that is not a exactly a novel, not quite a picture book, not really a graphic novel, or a flip book or a movie, but a combination of all these things."
This book will be used in multiple classes and will first be read together as a class by students enrolled in my Film & Literature: History class.
Thank you so much for considering being a part of funding this project.
My students will gain so much from reading this book.
They will build self-confidence and belief in their abilities, as they are able to get through a 550-page text. They will be exposed to a type of literature very different from novels they have read before. They will be exposed to the film history that drives the plot of the novel. And hopefully, they will be so intrigued by this gorgeous, unique text, they will learn that reading is a form of entertainment that can feed their creativity.
