A Long Walk to Water at the Library (A Book Study)

My students need a class set of the book, A Long Walk to Water, for our Community Read Project. My students also need resources about the Lost Boys of Sudan for our unit study.

My Students

What if you had to walk for miles, just for a sip of water? Our students will find out just what that would be like as we read "A Long Walk to Water" together as part of our Community Reads Project.

Our entire community will be reading this book.

My students come from all over the parish. This school is a school of choice for the Arts and Technology. It is a high-performing, high-poverty school. We serve Pre-Kindergarten through fifth grade. It will be our fifth graders that will be participating in this project. We have six classes of 25 students each. Each of the six classes will be using these books during their Library instruction time, as we participate in the Community Read.

My Project

I have requested a class set of of the book,"A Long Walk to Water". I have also requested eight copies of "Brothers in Hope" along with other titles that will be used as resources as we participate in the Community Read Project along with our local public library. Since we are a school of the Arts and Technology, I plan on integrating the Live Binders I have found with even more resources about the book. I also plan on doing some kind of arts integration along with this book study.

As we read about the Lost Boys of Sudan and study the books supplied by this project, I believe that it will impact the students tremendously.

It will teach the students empathy, as well as respect for other cultures. The materials will remain at the school so that the project can be repeated each year.
