Ms. Poluszejko from Memphis TN is requesting books through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need 3 big books, 48 books on healthy habits, 20 food and nutrition thematic books, and an apron that gives us a view into our bodies.

Memphis is known for lots of wonderful things! Civil Rights Museum? Check! Elvis? Check! Beale Street? Check! Unfortunately in 2012, Memphis was also identified as the most overweight city in the country, nearly 30% of Memphians are classified as obese. Help educate our youngest citizens now!
We're 108 ever-energetic first graders, working hard to learn and make ourselves better each day!
We attend an extended day college preparatory elementary school. Our national network of charter schools is known for our excellent record of putting our students on the path to college, and these first are the trailblazers in our wonderful school. Our school is free and has open enrollment. Though many of us come from challenging circumstances, we are dedicated to lighting up our bright future! We work hard to better ourselves to build a better future for our Memphis community.
As we jump into the Common Core standards, we will learn various units of studies. Our first grade students will focus on a unit about healthy choices for our bodies. This unit incorporates and educates students about good nutritional choices throughout the unit lesson plans. I have requested three big books, books on healthy habits, food and nutrition thematic books, and an apron that gives us a view into our bodies. The average kindergartner at our school ended kindergarten reading like a first grader. We created a school environment and culture around books that is infused with excitement and enthusiasm. Our students love to read! Despite the lack of resources we have, our students do not make excuses. It's common to walk into our rooms during independent reading to see students lying on the cold concrete ground with a book open. We would love to infuse the books into our classroom units and then allow students to reread and continue to build their knowledge by reading them again during independent reading time. Students will get an opportunity to see inside the human body using an apron.
We are hard workers who deserve great books to read.
We enjoy reading books and would be ecstatic to have new books to explore and learn about our bodies and healthy choices. Help us make a dream, our reality!
