Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"It is the supreme art of the teacher to awaken joy in creative expression and knowledge," Albert Einstein said, and is my teaching credo. By creating original works of art, my students learn in a deeper, more meaningful way.
My students are fifth graders at a low-income public school in New York.
They are hardworking first and second generation immigrants from South and Central America and Asia. They are a very energetic bunch and love hands-on learning. Many of them are English Language Learners, and the added visuals of arts and crafts really help provide them with the context to understand content.
My Project
One of the ways to peak the interest of my students is through arts and crafts. There is no greater joy in my classroom than a huge mess of pom poms, glitter, tissue paper, glue and the like! By the time the school year is through, my supplies have been ransacked and used to their capacity. With a new year starting, we need pipe cleaners, tissue paper, colored paper, colored pencils, markers, crayons and the list goes on! With a paper cutter, my students will have the right dimensions for our work, instantly!
With restocked craft supplies, my students can create animals for science projects, cards for various holidays, sculptures and masks in social studies and use markers, pencils and glue on a daily basis!
These materials will be used for years to come until it is time to replenish again!
