My students need 4 packs of styrofoam balls, 3 tubs of assorted dough, a pack of mosaic tiles, and other art and crafts supplies to build a 3D model of a cell for a hands-on project to reinforce their learning of different cells.
If you were to take a trip to my science classroom you would walk into a room of chaos, organized chaos that is. I love having my students learn through hands-on activities, projects and labs.
I serve a group of young ladies.
If I were to describe my girls in two words it would have to be interestingly delightful. I work with a very broad range of personalities from crazy to cruel, but I love them all. I love my school. Our mission is to teach and inspire young women to become leaders in the world. My main goal for my girls is for them to gain a love for science and the world around them. What I have found most intrigues them is the different labs and hands-on activities they do in class. They always want their work to be perfect and when truly engaged, it becomes difficult to pull them away from whatever it may be they are working on. They love seeing their work hung around the room our in the hallway, recognition is a huge deal.
My Project
My students will be using the different requested materials to create a 3D model of a cell. They will collaborate with a group/team to create the model. I am asking for four packs of styrofoam balls, 3 tubs of assorted colors of dough, a pack of mosaic tiles, and other art and crafts supplies. My students will need all of these supplies to design the various organelles inside of the cell. This activity will be great for them to grasp a better understanding of what cells are and how they function. The main idea the students are to learn is what types of cells exist and, how the different organelles inside of the cell help to keep the cells functioning properly. Through this activity they will be able to create a visual representation of a cell which will then assist with their cognition and engagement of cells. If students are engaged, and I believe activity will be very engaging for them, they will learn so much more.
I love hanging posters and work on the walls and from the ceiling.
By having content related material posted around my room, my students are able to receive the information in multiple facets. These projects will also be displayed in areas around the school for others students to see and learn. I believe this will assist in boosting student confidence and interest in science to perhaps create a love for science that will take them to places of higher learning in the future.
