A Bit of Chemistry To Excite Students about Science
My students need Bunsen Burners and glass tubing for science fun!
FULLY FUNDED! Mr. Hefner's classroom raised $177

My Students
Students in Chemistry always enjoy using Bunsen Burners. Due to a school fire I have not been able to do any glass bending in many years, and I want to change that this year.
My students are coming from more low socioeconomic areas than not.
Most never have done flame labs before they get to me and none have every had a chance to bend glass and make some of their own lab equipment. As a science teacher I value hands-on activities. Bending glass is hands-on and FUN. It is the type of activity that students remember. It is the type of activity that makes students want to be more involved in STEM. The three classes I teach this semester all involved the Physical Science side of science (Chemistry and Physics to be exact.) Chemistry can use the very glass they bend in future labs.
My Project
One aspect of this project is just the fun nature of bending glass. This is something that many students just don't get a chance to experience since the emphasis is so much on testing. I want to step outside of the box a bit and let the students make some of their own equipment. It might be simple dropper pipettes or glass bends, but when I did this years ago it was always a fun day and a worthwhile day for the students. They were excited and learned a bit about properties of matter and phases. Educational-fun-useful. That is a win-win-win scenario.
Activities like this get them excited about science.
I know that for a fact as I remember how excited the students would be when I did this years ago before our school fire. It is time the current students have a chance to do the same and be as excited.
