My Students

Living in western North Dakota, my students are largely unaware of the advances in technology, other than the ever-increasing presence of cell phones. With an increase in availability, students may see that there is more to technology than cell phones and video games.

I am a fourth-grade teacher at a small rural school, on the Fort Berthed Native American Reservation.

The majority of students are members of the Arikara, Hidatsa, and Mandan tribes, and the remainder of students are living here because of the oil fields. Despite being a small school, a large number of students qualify for free and reduced lunch, and a portion of the students live in such a way, that dinner is not always available. The students, despite these obstacles, come to school everyday and try their best. Sadly, many have trouble imagining a world outside their present situation, a problem I would like to help them solve.

My Project

This year I am starting our school's first STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) club after school. I plan on introducing the students to a variety of science, engineering, and technology concepts through project-based instruction. Over the summer, a number of students attended a science camp and became interested in the technology and engineering fields. Unfortunately due to limited space and in some cases inability to pay the fee for the camp, many students were not able to attend. I hope to remedy this by allowing students the chance to use a variety of technology to examine how scientists and engineers solve real world problems. The addition of a 3D scanner will allow students to see how objects are modeled and represented on computer (through CAD and similar programs). This would not only pave the way to understanding how 3D printing is done, but would also supplement math concepts that rely on three-dimensional visualization.

With the addition of this scanner, I hope to help students visualize objects and how three-dimensional design and object creation is not only possible, but something that may want to pursue after high school.

The previous technology I have introduced to the students has helped them in many ways and this will undoubtedly do the same. Your donation will impact the students and help them thrive in our increasingly tech-centric world.
