Common Core Standards are here and I want my students to have the best chance possible at tackling these "rigorous" standards! New non-fiction and fiction texts to share in our classroom library will get us off on the right foot.
I teach at a Title 1 (low income) school.
Students do not have books at home or the ability to frequently visit a county library. I want more books to put in my students hands to keep their interest in reading alive. It is amazing how eager kids truly are to read a good book! The new standards demand that my students not only read fictional stories, but also non-fiction text. The school library and my classroom library is lacking in these types of books.
My Project
My amazing 2nd grade students are mastering the art of decoding when reading and are ready to delve into comprehension and forming opinions about what they read. Students need a collection of exemplar texts that will inspire an interest in an author's ideas and help make connections to their lives. The Common Core standards are pushing students to read non-fiction texts and summarize the important information they read. These exciting and interesting books will help them learn how to read for enjoyment and for knowledge!
My students are eager to read good books and it is up to us to put books in their hands that help them grow as readers, but also help them learn about the world around them.
These growing minds need a growing collection of books to cover the interests of a diverse population of students. The Common Core standards are designed to help students learn and achieve more and that is my goal as well!
