My students need trade books they see in book stores and libraries rather than a steady diet of leveled books. They need to see themselves as readers with REAL books!

My Students

We are placing too much emphasis on numbers and levels - so much so that our kids can't pick up a book and know if it's a good fit book for them anymore without checking the number on the back. We need to give them good literature and regular books and allow them to read again without numbers.

I work as a literacy specialist and these books will be for students in first, second and third grades.

We are a large school in a rural district. Many of these students don't read at home and need school to be the place to get connected to books. I want to be their "book whisperer". If we don't connect them to books now, when they are young and hopefully free from all the online distractions of their older brothers and sisters, then when? We will lose them as they get older, find reading more difficult and tune out and plug in.

My Project

We have such wonderful resources now for kids. Gone are the days of Dick and Jane. Authors are creating lovely books, with marvelous illustrations and great story lines especially for this age group. Scholastic has developed an incredible line of chapter books, called "Branches" that are emergent chapter books for those students that want to start reading "fat" books but aren't ready for traditional chapter books. This series is just perfect for them. They have short chapters along with colored pictures to support the story. 2nd graders are delighted to be able to say they are reading chapter books and struggling 3rd graders can also have a chapter book without feeling like they are reading "baby" books. These books work for two very different groups of readers.

Reading is the most important skill not only in school but in life. But it's not just something you need to have in order to learn, it's one of life's pleasures. One of my greatest pleasures is connecting children with books, but in order to do so, I must have the right books and each child is different, requiring different books.
