My students need more computers. Our school asks kids to use more technology, with limited access to computer labs. My students need this new Chromebook computer to have more computer access.
Over 100 kids in my school do not have reliable access to computers. While most of the students in my school have computer access, a significant number still don't have the opportunity to learn helps lower the number of kids who never get to use computers.
Most of the students in my classroom are middle-class, but that term has become entirely too vague over the past decade or so.
Many of my students are have parents who have been adversely affected by our struggling economy: they don't have the additional income to pay for home computers and Internet access.
Even many of the families in my district who have not seen these type of struggles cannot keep up with the digital demands modern education is having on families. The majority of families within our district do not have enough computer access. Many of the families in our district have between two and four children attending public schools. With so much education online, it is hard for larger families to schedule enough time for all their kids (and parents) to use the internet for school purposes.
Simply put, all of my students need more access to computers to keep up with the expectations of online learning.
My Project
This computer will be the second of (hopefully) many computers I add to my classroom. Each day, students will get experience with this computer and get a chance to create something to share with his or her classmates.
While school districts are pushing for these digital resources to help their students, we don't often give our students enough time in class to teach them how to use these computers. By adding one computer at a time to my classroom, students excited to get one-on-one help with all the new technology initiatives our district requires.
Once this project is realized, I will continue with a third, identical project, to bring another Chromebook into my classroom. After that project, I will add another. Each additional computer creates collaboration between classmates and grows their technological prowess exponentially: teens can teach each other about technology much faster and easier than adults could ever teach them about technology
Asking families to find ways to get to a library to use the Internet is not equity, nor is it always fair.
Telling kids to get to school early to use a computer lab is not equity, nor is it always fair.
I want all of my students to have the opportunity and correct level of training they need for all the new areas of technology we ask them to be proficient in. Having even two classroom computers gives more student access, and help, to achieve and excel in these new ways of learning.
