Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Imagine being the child who could not say a word! This is what a child lives with everyday at school!!

This ipod would benefit a student with Selective Mutism.

She attends a Title 1 School. The school has free lunch and after school tutoring. She is in the general education setting and is expected to do everything the other students do. It has been difficult to accommodate these students do to funding at our school.

My Project

For those of you who my not know Selective Mutism is a childhood anxiety disorder. When a child with Selective Mutism experiences high anxiety, their body copes by shutting down speech. At school this student can't speak but at home is able to. This is NOT by choice or refusal to speak. Having an iPod will help this student begin to communicate with picture symbols and text-to-speech programs. The iPod will be downloaded with specific, language-evoking and interactive applications. It will promote written and expressive language for this student.

I can't imagine what it is like to go to school each day and not be able to say a word.

It is truly heartbreaking. I know this child loves to come to school because she cries when she is sick and has to stay home. I believe that if she is given the tools she will learn to communicate and someday be able to speak in the class!
