Mrs. Taboada from Cheltenham PA is requesting supplies through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need a phonics curriculum including sound cards, reference charts, phonics notebooks, alphabet strips, and dry erase writing tablets.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
Enthusiasm for reading and learning abound in my Kindergarten classroom at an urban charter school in a high poverty, high crime area. However, many of my students have started the school year with no previous experience in a formal learning environment and, therefore, lack many basic skills.
The students in my Kindergarten class are very motivated to learn and are always trying their best.
They listen avidly when I read and try to memorize the books so that they can "read", too. However, they are quickly becoming frustrated with the slow pace at which they are making progress towards reading. At the beginning of this year, most of my students could not recognize their names or any letters of the alphabet. They were unfamiliar with concepts such as rhyming and letter-sounds. Although their hard work and natural learning abilities have helped them make good progress, many of them are still struggling with these basic skills and are in danger of falling behind the pace needed to read on grade level.
My students deserve to have access to all the tools and experiences possible to stop this from happening. At my school, students work intensively on academics to eliminate the achievement gap before it even appears in Kindergarten. They can do this best with a phonics curriculum, and the Fundations materials are an excellent resource for supporting my students' learning. Using individual white boards, letter magnets, and phonics notebooks will improve my students' handwriting, letter recognition, and spelling. Engaging pictures, alphabet puzzles, and a puppet will also help my encourage students' natural enthusiasm for learning and reading. The hands-on materials in this phonics curriculum are the perfect way to keep my students engaged and excited about learning to read. The name of the curriculum says it all: "Fundations" is a fun way for students to gain the foundations they need for success in reading.
Your generous support of this project will provide my students with the materials and resources needed to increase their progress in learning to read.
This curriculum will also help lay a foundation of strong language skills and knowledge while infusing some fun into the study of these concepts. By kindly supporting this project, you will help my students learn to read and love doing it!
