In an urban city where crime and unemployment exceed national averages, to say that my school is an anomaly is an understatement. Based upon an ethos of high academic achievement, hard work, discipline, love, and a family-like atmosphere, my school is noted as the top academically performing school in Oakland, California, and currently ranks among the highest API test scores in the state of California for several consecutive years. We are a diverse and tight-knit community of students from various cultures and ethnicities (many speak English as their second language.) Still, like most urban communities, our school is a "bare-bones operation" and does not have sufficient resources to teach kids about science outside of their outdated textbooks, or without teachers incurring the financial costs of going above and beyond for their students. I've always been an underdog and don't mind being scrappy. But my students should not have to suffer for a lack of resources in the 21st century.
