I teach Preschool at Midway Elementary School in Natalbany, La. Our school houses grades Preschool through Second. We enroll over 700 children. The majority of these children come from low income homes. Most children come from one parent families where the parent works and has very little time with child. It's not surprising at "share time" on Monday morning for the child to say "We went to Walmart". That is about as far as some of the children ever go. This is the thrill of their little lives. I want to change that; I want to give them a thrill they will remember and also enhance their learning. What I would like to do is teach my students about "Animals". They will learn about wild and tame ones. I have some books, pictures, and manipulatives to share and teach the children and let them explore. Some other manipulatives I would like so I can teach what the animal looks like and their names. Children can feel and act out stories about animals that I read to them. Through books they will see animals and learn animals names (horse-colt, bear-cub). At the end of our unit I would like to take my class on the trip of their life to the Baton Rouge Zoo. Most of my children don't have the money it costs for a trip to Baton Rouge. This is the main thing I'm asking for is to pay for our trip, to give them an experience they will always remember. In the past I have taken my class and had to pay for many out of my pocket. I never minded because seeing their little faces light up at the sight of the animals always made my day. I want them to leave my classroom not only knowing all about animals but having had the chance to venture out of Natalbany.
