Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

Today's students are submerged in technology at an incredibly young age. Children are use to being entertained daily with technology such as video games, computers, and television. Students often start school technologically savvy only to enter a classroom with little or no technology. My desire is to create a classroom environment which uses technology daily to capture my student's attention. I teach Pre-Algebra to seventh graders at Shortridge Middle School in downtown Indianapolis, Indiana. My students face many challenges to meet today's educational standards. My biggest challenge teaching them is getting and keeping their attention. This challenge will greatly diminish with the funding of this proposal. All one hundred eighty-five of my students will be engaged in their learning throughout the entire class period with a classroom set of TI-84 Plus Silver EZ Spot graphing calculators. My students will use TI-84 Plus Silver graphing calculators to move past simple paper and pencil tasks. They will explore equations of lines without frustration but excitement as the equations come to life on a graph. They will use these calculators to study for test using the study card program. We will examine real life structures such as buildings and bridges to discover mathematics beyond the classroom. These calculators will allow my students to learn across the curriculum with the science information and programs stored within them. Mathematics will come alive with calculator technology for these inner city children. My largest class size is currently thirty-six students. To begin my classroom set I need 20 TI-84 Plus Silver EZ Spot graphing calculators. Thank you in advance for funding this proposal.
