Dear Donor, I am a first year Teaching Fellow at PS 290 in East New York, Brooklyn. Most of the students there qualify for free breakfast and lunch. I teach ESL to upper elementary grades. Since the beginning of April, I have started a chess club. We meet once a week for a period of 45 minutes. Currently there are 6-8 students in club, but with adequate resources the number will increase. The vision I have for our chess club is one in which I can teach basic chess strategies for the first part of the class and then allow the students to play for the rest of the time. I would also like to invite grandmasters of chess to come to lecture to our students on a monthly basis. Also, I would like to have an adequate number of tournament style chess boards and clocks to prepare the students for competition. A thriving chess club at our school would make a difference in the lives of its members. The students appreciate the discipline of the game and love the competitiveness that chess offers. Also, researchers believe that a solid foundation in chess can help improve child's math skills. Your gift will broaden the minds of our club members. Thank you for your time.
