Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a second grade teacher to a wonderful group of 24 students. Teaching this year has been more rigorous and demanding not only for my students but for myself as well. The test for third graders that was always given in April is now for the first time being given in January almost immediately after Christmas vacation. As a teacher, I feel more pressure to prepare my students for the upcoming standardized reading and writing tests. I know that very soon it will be my second graders' turn to take those tests. The tests that students take require critical thinking skills, quick thinking, and accuracy. The tests are all timed. Playing chess has been proven to develop critical and analytical thinking as well accuracy and speed. Many schools have implemented a chess programs and have experienced an increase in students' academic scores. I need to try to help the kids in my school the best way that I can. I just want the opportunity to try to develop my students and other students in my school using every means possible. It is for these reasons that I was thinking of starting a chess club in my school, but I want to begin with my class first. I of course would need the supplies to get things started. It is for this reason that I am requesting the chess sets, timers, and demo boards.
