I am an occupational therapist who works with a population of students who have severe/profound impairments. Most of them are bound to wheelchairs for part or most of the time. Regardless of their disability, they still need to experience a diverse curriculum just as their peers do. These students have classes such as adapted physical education (PE) as well as integrated physical education (PE). With the creativity of the PE teacher and some assistive technology, adaptive PE can be a great experience for a child with a disability. With the assistive technology, our special needs students can participate in integrated PE (mix of able body students and students with disabilities).
This is where Donors Choose comes into play. I am writing for a bowling switch. We already have a bowling ramp on which the ball is placed and rolled down towards the direction of the pins. Many of our students don't have the strength or motion to be able to push the actual ball. There is a special bowling switch that releases the ball with just the push of a button. So with just a push of the button, my students would be able to participate in PE class. This gives a sense of independence to the child raising his/her self esteem and value for physical education. During integrated physical education, able-bodied students have the opportunity to learn the importance of physical activity for everyone as their classmates with disabilities are encouraged to use the abilities they do have to participate.
