I am a first year math Teaching Fellow at a public middle-school in Harlem. Almost all of them failed their sixth grade city-wide math test. The first day of school, most of my students walked into the class, threw down their backpacks, and announced, "We hate math!" I have spent the last six months trying to change their minds. Math isn't just a boring subject-- it's something that all of us, my students included, need every day. I've tried a variety of techniques over the past six months to help them see the exciting parts of math. I have been most successful when I have used bright, visual displays of the math concepts, especially math DVD's. DVD's are perfect for my students-- many of whom have special learning needs-- because DVD's grab their interest. When I have questioned my students about a concept after they've watched a DVD on it, they always surprise me-- they will quickly and accurately explain the concept, sometimes a concept that I've been trying to get them interested in for weeks! I feel that using more math DVD's will help my students understand the math, enjoy it, and form a foundation for a life of mathematical learning. Unfortunately, my school only has one TV/Video cart (and no DVD player) on my floor and it is very hard to get. I know that my students could achieve so much more if we had a TV right in the room, and having a TV and DVD player would give us a launching pad to greater mathematical achievement. I want my students to have every advantage. The things they deal with when they go home from school astound me. The least I can do is make math class a time in their day when something makes sense and is fun. I would be grateful to anyone who could help me achieve this goal.
