I teach at a Title I middle school in North Carolina. 89% of the student population receives free- or reduced-price lunch. 85% of the population is African-American, 11% is Hispanic, and 4% is Caucasian. I teach 8th grade English/language arts. While some of my students read at an appropriate grade level, the majority enter the 8th grade at least 2 grade levels behind. My students all live within a 5-mile radius of the school. Poverty and gang-related crime are issues we deal with every day, both in school and when the students are in the neighborhood with each other outside of school. Many live in single-parent homes and have multiple siblings. Despite those factors, my students are compliant and respectful to me and they remain eager to learn in my class. When we read novels together, they stay completely engaged and devour every word of the stories. I am committed to providing superior resources to my students.
