Inspired by a French program called "Journée de Gout," this local program has been adapted to cultivate awareness and love of food from how it’s grown to how it is enjoyed. Farm to Table teaches fifth graders from Southdale Elementary about where food comes from, the importance of fresh, well-prepared food, nutrition, eating as a social activity, and to understand that at every point in food production and distribution there is a career opportunity.
The Miami Valley Institute of Food & Spirits (MVIFS) consists of members who meet often to enjoy great food for the sole purpose of raising funds for Farm to Table, our education program for fifth-graders of Dayton. In 2019 we are anxious to recreate our successes of previous years by supporting the fifth grade students of Southdale Elementary as they discover how a farm produces their food; how good food is selected for freshness and nutrition; how these foods are prepared at home and by professional chefs in commercial kitchens; how food is distributed through local grocers; the setting of a table; and the etiquette of sharing meals with friends and family.
