Our class needs 66 copies of the fantastic Civil Rights fictional novel, "Watsons Go to Birmingham".

Because I have the privilege of teaching both English and social studies to my 8th graders, the curricula often tend to overlap. I find that students invest themselves more quickly in their education when they can make connections to what we are studying and their own prior knowledge (both from outside school or things we have learned previously in the year). This year, as part of our extended unit on "American History: Struggles and Triumphs," I would love to read the fantastic novel "The Watsons Go To Birmingham." Set during the Civil Rights era in the South, this book is both a great introduction to one of the most influential political movements in United States history and a fantastic piece of historical fiction. Because many of my students in North Philadelphia have never even left the 5 block radius that surrounds their home (sad, but absolutely true...), I find that this study will be invaluable both in studying the common human experience we all share and an absolutely unparalleled episode in history. With individual copies, each student will be able to take the text home (something they cannot do right now with any book) and work on an extended social studies research paper and literary analysis paper for our end of the year writing portfolios.
