This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Imagine a life where you never leave your community. A few days at the beach has been your best and only vacation-if you're lucky. For you, a trip to Carowinds theme park is a once in a lifetime opportunity. This sounds harsh, but it is a reality for many of the students in my third grade class in a Title One school. At my school, ninety percent of students receive free or reduced lunch. Fifty percent of students are English Language Learners. These students cannot imagine life outside of their own community. They do not understand how large and diverse our country and world are. Now, imagine trying to teach them about these things without an appropriate map or globe. I want my students to see the relationship between themselves and other people. I want them to know the continents and where they are in relationship to us. As they study other cultures, I want them to know where they are located. These students need to know about their world. My students can gain these understandings through integrated learning experiences that include the use of a world map, US map, and a globe. These materials will be integrated into literacy, science, and social studies. During literacy, we will locate the home country of authors we study, during science we will discuss where plants and animals are native, and during social studies, students will develop map skills, and discuss cultural differences and similarities between our culture and others. We will use the maps and globe to discuss cultures in different cultures. The use of maps and a globe will help students with little understanding of the world around them develop this understanding. These materials will help me give them experiences they may never have otherwise. You can help my students gain an understanding of their world. Thank you for supporting my students.
