My project needs Bilingual Songs, volumes 1-4, a set of 8 English Spanish story books, a tabletop magnetic vocabulary set, Spanish puzzle cards, Spanish color cards, Fiesta in the House and Town learning materials, a Spanish and English book set, and Learn Our Manners with English and Spanish Words.

Hola! I am the new Spanish teacher at Glen Alpine Elementary School. We are a small elementary school in the foothills of the mountains of NC. We have about 600 students in grades Pre-kindergarten through the 5th grade. Many of our children come from low-income families. Our community is changing and we have lots of Spanish speaking community members. Learning a second language will be beneficial for the children as they grow up in this community. Even though the school system does not offer foreign language classes to all students, the principal at our school saw the need to encourage children to learn a second language. It's so important to do this while the children are young. All the children in the school come to my Spanish class once weekly. My first months have been a real learning experience! I have found that the children are eager and excited to learn a new language. I have really been impressed at how quickly they have learned. Since we are offering this class as an extra program that is not included in all schools, we have had no money to buy teaching materials. I have made do with very little for the first few months. It would be wonderful to have some teaching materials such as books, songs, and puzzles to enhance the learning experiences of the children. With the music cassettes the children can listen to the songs and practice them, making it easier to learn the language. The flash cards will increase the memory skills of the students. Using the skills in the manners set they will be able to improve manners while learning a new language. Color cards will help all the children to learn basic words in the Spanish language. The Spanish puzzles are good to encourage the use of the language in a fun way. All these requested item will provide such enrichment for the students in learning a new language and improving their proficiency. We will use the materials in setting up the foreign language program at school. These items will greatly enhance the learning of all the students in the school as they come to Spanish class weekly. All the students will benefit from the new materials, not just as a one-time class but as an ongoing program that will benefit them all year long. Learning a new language will open doors for these students as they grow. The added enrichment of a second language will help them to be more successful in life. These young minds are ready and open to learning Spanish. You can help us by providing these materials for the children at Glen Alpine School.
