Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a 4th grade teacher working in an underperforming urban California school. My class is a racially diverse group made up of children who are Mexican, Chinese, Vietnamese, Filipino, Tongan, and African-American. As part of the reading curriculum, my students are required to read a variety of multicultural myths and legends. While this is an excellent goal, my school does not provide these stories or offer them in our school library. The few legends that are available are based solely on American and Western European stories. There are no such stories that capture the rich culture of Mexico, South American, Africa, or Asia. Yet, my students would benefit from reading folklore about people and places they have a connection to. They deserve to see themselves in the stories that they read. I would like to provide these children with a set of multicultural myths and legends from around the world. I have chosen books that represent the ethnic and linguistic backgrounds of my students. These stories will not only help boost their literacy skills but will empower them as people. Thank you for your support!
