I teach in a low income neighborhood. My kindergarten students are over 75% minority and over 50% second language learners. I am doing everything I can to help these At-Risk kids to understand their school, community, and how to get along and be productive. I have found an excellent series of books on character traits like respect, cooperation, and generosity that I feel will help me to accomplish this. They are written in primary text that even the second language students should be able to understand. They also have Accelerated Reader tests available with them. This is a program that is very successful at our school. The students read a book and then take a computerized test to check for comprehension. I have been very successful teaching the kids to read with this program and feel this character value books will enrich their reading skills and their lives.
