"Does a penguin have fur or feathers? Can bears swim? How tall is a giraffe? What kind of noise does a real monkey make? My enthusiastic first graders are full of questions about animals, and I would love for them to have a chance to explore those animals and find the answers themselves at the Memphis Zoo.

I am one of four first grade teachers in a small school in Duncan, Mississippi, a small town in the Mississippi Delta. All 70 of the first graders at our school come from low-income backgrounds and often have unstable home lives. Because of their location and their circumstances, many students don't have the opportunity to visit the zoo to see the animals they read about in books or see on television up close.

The families of our students have raised the money to cover admission to the zoo, but we need your help to pay for an hour-long zoo class for each child and 2 buses to take us the 100 miles to the zoo. Getting to see real, exotic animals up close, and learning about them from a qualified zoologist would be the highlight of the year for our first graders.

The cost of a trip to the zoo for 66 students and their chaperones is $890, including transportation and fulfillment ?.

Dear kimberly, Linda, Mrs. Jay, Jeanne, Terry, Grandma and Grandpa, Liz and Anonymous Donor,
Thank you so much for your generous donation to help the first grade students at my school visit the Memphis Zoo. They are already so excited. All they have been writing and talking about are the animals they are looking forward to seeing. We've been acting out different animals and learning about their habitats, so I know that this is going to be a really fun an exciting learning experience for all 66 of them. Thank you!

On Jun 5, 2007, Ms. H. followed this note with student letters sent via mail to the donor who completed this project, and to donors who gave $100 or more.
