Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students have many different independent reading levels. I want to provide them all with choices of books to read on each of their levels.
My 5th grade students are amazing!
Over half of them have special needs of some sort, whether special education, English as a Second Language learners, or other accommodations. We also have several students classified as gifted. We are a high-poverty school, with 75% of our students receiving free or reduced lunch.
Our school is a small neighborhood school, but it is quickly growing. The students here are sweet kids who have a desire to learn and do their best. We are excited to see each other every day and learn something new together.
My Project
At my school we use the Accelerated Reader program, which allows students to take comprehension quizzes on the computer for the books they have read. My students love to challenge themselves and read as many books as possible to take those "AR" quizzes. My partner teacher and I have a pizza party as an incentive for our students who take and pass 10 or more AR tests in a nine weeks, which is the equivalent of one book per week plus one. These extra books will allow our students to have more choices that are on their independent reading level.
A love of reading is one of the most important things I can instill in my students.
I chose these books because not only are they on all different reading levels, they are on topics that my students enjoy. Reading is much more enjoyable if you can choose what you want to read. Please help me give my students that opportunity!
