Have you ever sat through a lesson and at the end thought, 'What did they just say?' Many students need a hands-on approach to learning many subjects and math is one of them.
A large portion of the student population at my school is challenged by generational and situational poverty.
This results in absentee and/or uninvolved parents, little ability to focus and follow through, negative social behaviors, and an acute lack of personal responsibility.
Ours is a PK-5 neighborhood school with 70.09% of its total student population on the free and reduced meal program. Students are a mix of socio-economic backgrounds, gender, races, and academic abilities.
My Project
All centers and games requested focus on essential math skills that are taught and expected to be mastered in kindergarten. After whole group instruction, students can reinforce the lesson by completing a hands-on Instant Learning Center, File Folder Game or Partner Game. Many times a student can grasp a concept quicker by working in small groups, on their own, with a partner, or one-on-one with a teacher. Each of the resources requested can provide opportunities for children to show independence in learning or leadership in helping a peer to be successful. Pattern block activity cards will help students explore shapes, patterning, and symmetry in a fun and creative way.
This project will help boost confidence in math while also helping students gain independence in their ability to learn math.
It will provide students with more opportunities for hands-on learning while exploring new concepts and reinforcing new material.
