My Students

Remember the days when picking up a book was exciting? Visiting a magical place or reading about someone you want to be? In my PreK class my students are curious and enthusiastic beginning readers. To watch them enjoying books alone or with a friend is a very rewarding experience.

My students are preschool children ages 3,4,and 5.

I have two 21/2 hour sessions with 20 students in each session. There is a teacher assistant present in each session to assist students each day and parent volunteers who give their time to assist the students. There is a mixture of various academic abilities and racial backgrounds.The children attend an inner city public school located in Illinois and the majority of them are from low-income families. The children love to come to school everyday and are very passionate about learning. They enjoy singing, dancing, and participating in the many activities the preschool curriculum has to offer, especially reading and listening to books.

My Project

A listening center would enhance the children's love of books and strengthen their independent reading skills. A group of 4 children would be able to sit and enjoy the same book together and be able to talk about the book and possibly learn how to read some of the words in the book after many repetitions. Children would be taught to go to the listening center independently and operate the CD player and choose a book to listen to with some of their friends or by themselves after trying the center several times. This will allow them to think for themselves and to learn to make their own choices when it comes to good literature.

In these days of video games and TV, this project is meant to encourage the children to continue to read and look at different kinds of books.

I hope to foster a love for reading by showing them that books can take them on adventures, show them magical places, and even teach them about things they want to know. Because they are very early learners, starting them on a positive path about reading and listening to good books will hopefully continue throughout their future educational years.
