Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My first grade students face the challenge of mastering new and more complicated mathematical concepts this year. Our school has adopted a new version of publisher Scott-Foresman's "Envision" which relies on technology to bring the concepts alive for students.
I teach 24 eager first graders, in a Title I school.
All students receive free breakfast and lunch. Most students are learning English as a second language and come from lower socioeconomic homes. One parent families, children being raised by grandparents, and parents working late hours are some of the difficulties facing our students. However challenged, our students are extremely motivated to learn and have wonderful parents who want the best for them. Comprehension skills are the key to our students' success in school and life. The children need a differentiated curriculum in order to master vocabulary and concepts. My students are bright and eager to learn. They need math lessons that make concepts easier to understand. My students are excited to learn, but do not have many educational resources or opportunities outside my classroom. Most of them don’t have Internet access at home and just a few of them have access to a computer.
My Project
Having a laptop computer in the classroom will allow the students to experience the new math curriculum "Envision" the way it is intended to be presented. It will also allow me to do a better use of the interactive DVD that accompanies the math program. The "Envision" program also has the interactive lessons on their website, but a laptop is needed to access that as well. The laptop is essential for presenting each math lesson in its interactive format. Students will experience each lesson component through interacting with colorful animated characters that present math stories and concepts in a visual and auditory stimulating manner.
For students such as mine who are learning English, it is most important to incorporate this technology into the math program. Math vocabulary and concepts would be reinforced daily in a vivid, fun format for students. And of course, we can use it for the new language arts program which is also fully interactive.
Having current technology available to my students will get them excited about learning and keep them engaged throughout the day.
It will be an asset to my classroom by enhancing all lessons. Using an animated, visually and orally stimulating lesson daily for all students, especially those learning English, would make learning math more comprehensible and fun. Please give my students the opportunity to have access to the unlimited resources that can only be available through technology.
