My Students

The students in my school are very excited about continuing the school garden project we began last spring, which was funded by generous Donors Choose donors. This year we plan to double the size of the garden and donate part of the produce to the local food pantry, and/or homeless shelter.

Our children attend a public school with a high population of low socioeconomic students and English language learners.

They love learning and the garden has brought new enthusiasm for learning to our school. They look forward to coming to school and visiting the garden. We have also started a compost pile and they are bringing in plants matter from home to add to it faithfully. We have a "Garden Club" now and we meet once a week to learn about gardening and nature. We do special projects in preparation for the planting season and the new harvest we hope to have. So far the students have built a solar oven with two high school seniors who come to volunteer with them. We will try it out in the summer using produce from the garden.

My Project

The resources I have requested, hoes, shovels and hand tools, will enable an entire class to work in the garden together side by side, learning as they plant. They will be close to the earth, seeing what lives in the ground and exploring those creatures. They will learn how these living beings benefit or are a detriment to our garden. Last year, before my first proposal to Donors Choose, we owned one trowel. I dug the holes and the children put the plants in them. Students will be able to feel what it's like to really work the land. I will use the resource books to learn more about being an efficient and productive gardener. I have also requested a dual purpose griddle/grill that we will use to cook healthy recipes. Our students have already learned that the garden needs to be tended throughout the summer. There are some who come faithfully to weed and water the garden in July and August. During that time we do art projects and research to answer questions that might come up also.

This project will impact the students who participate in a few ways.

They will learn where food comes from. They will use the vegetables to make healthy recipes so they will be learning about healthy food choices in an effort to help combat childhood obesity. They will experience community service when we give to the local food pantry or homeless shelter. And they will learn about the benefits of living close to the earth and the peace and tranquility a garden can offer.
