My Students
Help us prepare for our future! The only access we have to technology in our classroom is an overhead from 1994, a CD player from 1998, and a computer from 2004!!!
I serve low-income students in the Charlotte, NC area.
Many of these children come from homes where technology is not accessible, and their parents work and do not have time to help them with school work. They have high potential, but they have an unfair disadvantage because of the lack of resources.
Many of my students intend to go to college after school. Everyday, we discuss what year they will graduate and go to college (Class of 2024!). We even talk about colleges they want to go to after high school. I firmly believe that with support given to them in the classroom, proper resources, and access to technology, my students will be able to reach any dream that they can achieve.
My Project
For my classroom, I am requesting a Nook tablet. There are multiple reasons I am requesting a Nook tablet. On Nooks, expensive children's books can be purchased for as low as $0.99. It would greatly expand our classroom library! The children would also be able to sit down and read a story to themselves-the Nook has books for children that read the story aloud.
The Nook would also provide my students with educational apps. I have many students who struggle with letter recognition, number recognition, and sounding out words. Did you know that there are multiple apps that are designed to support children in all of these areas? Children would be able to independently learn by playing fun games! They would be actively engaged in the learning process through tactile, visual, and auditory skills promoted through these apps for the Nook.
Most importantly, these children would be able to share similar technology experiences as other children, despite their lack of resources at home.
This resource would make the difference in the lives of not only my students this year, but the students in my future classes.
These children have so much to offer the world, but they need to learn to use technology like everyone else. They need to be ready to use technology to learn and to research to prepare for college. Most importantly, they need to feel like other children who have access to technology on a regular basis. Please consider the impact that you would make on so many children!
