My Students

Antarctica and penguins are two very interesting topics for third graders. They want to know everything and see as many examples as they can about these two extreme topics. Without books to support their learning and interests the topics still remain a mystery in many ways.

My third graders are eager to learn about their world.

They are curious and ask a lot of questions about everything! Due to the high poverty and ELL situations in their lives, access to resource materials, and life experiences is limited. Many of them have never been to a zoo to see a penguin in person! They need as many forms of information as possible to help them understand and grasp concepts.

My Project

These books will provide my students with a wide variety of genre's to learn about penguins, such as poetry, fiction chapter books, and informational texts. These books will not only provide information about their topics of research, but will also be mentor texts for writing, reading materials for further investigation and independent reading, and visual support to the concepts and ideas being taught. At the end of this unit my students will know how to research information using higher level reading skills, write about their topic in comprehensive paragraphs, and present their information in a well thought out speech using pictures and ideas gleaned from these books.

These topics will come alive for my students with these books to support their learning.
