Bring Science and Technology Together in the Classroom
My students need basic class technology. AHS (inner-city) needs a science department laptop for: student projects, field trips, guest speakers, Marine Bio Club.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We are Title I with 97.8% receiving free/reduced pay meals. We focus on individualized attention to studentsÃÂâÃÂÃÂÃÂàacademic success and promote the use of new technology. We propel Black & Latino youth into science/medical fields and professions: increasing numbers of seniors declaring for science from 5% to 25%!
Our mission: develop Black and Latino leadership for under-served communities, and demonstrate their potential and ability to attend college and graduate.
Our success in state tests, and college admissions is phenomenal. Admission is an open lottery for all students, unlike other charter schools that hand pick 9th grade entrants. The school demographically is primarily recent Latino immigrants with families below or at the Federal poverty level.
Students face an uphill battle to gain college entrance as English language Learners and increased tuition costs with complimentary reductions in grants. Our successes represent a major accomplishment attesting to the strength of our science department and the school academics. I teach the only Marine Biology and one of the few Human Anatomy courses in inner city LA. Our goal: Excite Black & Latino youth about science as a career. Students are motivated to participate in internships we have developed with USC, UCLA, UCSB, JPL, Cabrillo Marine Aquarium, etc.
My Project
We have formed a partnership with the marine studies programs at USC and UCLA to assist us in this effort. We field teams for the National Oceans Science Bowl, Edison Challenge and the USC QuikScience competition. I took 35 students to the USC Wrigley Marine Science center on Catalina Island for three days of hardcore science, college lectures, labs and recreational activities.
We attend college level scientific lectures monthly at the Natural History Museum and science lectures sponsored by COSEE (Marine Science collaborative). The Marine Biology Club carries out a broad based educational campaign on safe fish consumption and preventing storm drain run-off pollution reaching thousands in the Spanish-speaking community.
We are in need of a class laptop. We have opportunities to SKYPE with researchers and the Teacher at Sea on board a NOAA vessel, Joides , but do not have the means. With a class laptop, with camera, students will be able to teach each other through cooperative efforts.
All classes will be able to present the most innovative biology, marine biology and Physio-anatomy by projecting human anatomical structures, video clips and perform real-time assessments, lab practicums and video conferencing.
The computer will be used by the 60 member Marine Biology club that educates, in Spanish, in their community, at environmental activities (Earth Day, Roots and Shoots, community health fairs, etc.) about ÃÂâÃÂÃÂÃÂÃÂsafe fish consumption and preventing ocean environmental degradation.
