How would you survive if you had to rely on the speaking and reading ability of your 9 year old? Could he/she help you at the Dr. office? Can he/she fill an application for you? These students have to help with adult roles at home, learn English, and learn academic content.
My students come from a mixed cultural background.
Of the 98 ESL students I work with, about 1/3 come from Spanish speaking countries. The rest come from various war torn areas such as Somalia, Burma, and Iraq. Many of these kids have had experience that no child should have to endure. We try to provide a safe and engaging atmosphere for the kids to learn both English and academic content. Our school is an urban, Title 1 school housing approximately 400 students. Fortunately, our school has special permission to have smaller class sizes than most of the state. This provides us an opportunity to build deeper relationships with each student and to accommodate their personal needs, emotionally and academically.
To be successful in American schools, and in careers afterward, you must be able to read with comprehension and be able to use various technologies. As a teacher, I am charged with preparing these students from other countries to be successful participants in America's future. If my students had an eReader like the Kindle, we could practice reading in a format that is quickly becoming the norm: reading from a screen. Reading academic content from a screen such as a computer or eReader is a necessary skill that these students are lacking. With two Kindle Fires, I can guide small groups at a time showing them how to track the text, highlight words to find their definition with the built-in dictionary, and use the color graphics to assist to support the texts. All of these skills are practiced with tangible books, but the steps to complete them are different when reading from a screen.
Teaching students from another country English and academic content is difficult enough.
Being able to provide instruction with materials that are relevant in the real world is a greater challenge. Having 2 Kindle Fire eReaders will help increase the students interest in both reading and technology. More importantly, it will provide them with experience reading in a format that will most likely be mandatory by the time they reach high school.
