My Students
Help magnify our world! Do you remember sitting in Science class trying to visualize a "cell?" Or being told that water is full of microscopic beings yet, all you saw was clear water? This is the challenge my students face when learning about cells and the microscopic world of life.
My students are inquisitive and excited about learning yet, they are already knocked down before the year begins.
Living in Eastern Kentucky it is amazing that some of my students make it to school ready to learn each day. So many are faced with abusive parents, drugs in their homes and ongoing poverty that has struck generations of their families. Even with all odds stacked against them, they show up with a smile on their face and a willingness to show the world that they will overcome the injustices against them!
My Project
When students come to me with an eagerness to learn, I want to repay them with the best opportunity for learning. Students are always excited when we begin investigating the microscopic world but, become frustrated when they cannot see what these microscopic beings actually look like. By obtaining a Flex Cam I will be able to expose my students to a world they have never seen. One everlasting activity is my bacteria lesson "It's a small world after all." In this lesson students would be able to sample daily foods (milk, yogurt, etc.) to see that things are not what they seem. With the flex cam I could show students that everything they come in contact with consists of microscopic bacteria. Students would be engaged as they watch the bacteria squirm across the screen. We could then determine bacteria counts, discuss bacterial replication and growth. Then I could connect this back to my students overall well being and how proper handling of their food affects their health.
In a time when the U.S.
is falling behind 3rd world countries in Science, I have to inspire this generation to fall in love with Science. Incorporating hands on activities allows me to engage students and drive students towards a lifelong career in Science. I see every child that enters my class as a child that could change our future. I have to make sure I connect everything in their life back to Science. Getting this project funded is just the first step in establishing that connection.
