My Students

Calculators needed!! Advanced math courses (such as trigonometry and calculus) require the use of graphing calculators. Likewise, in order to have a fair competitive shot on the ACT/SAT one must be literate in these tools. But right now my students do not have access to these essential devices...

My students are 9th-12th graders on a Lakota reservation school in South Dakota.

They are intelligent, hard-working, and strong -- true Lakota leaders. They inspire me every day. As students in a very rural school (the nearest city of size is 2 hours away) they do not have access to resources readily available elsewhere and asking my students to purchase their own graphing calculators is simply not a reasonable request. Yet, despite the obstacles my students face at home they remain inquisitive, dedicated, and determined -- they desperately long for the opportunity to take harder and more challenging math classes. My students both want and deserve the opportunity to continually challenge themselves.

My Project

With your help my school will be able to purchase 6 TI84 graphing calculators. I teach every high school math class in the high school except pre-algebra and these calculators will allow me to provide my higher level math students with the tools they need to take courses like trigonometry and calculus. Additionally, my students will be able to use these calculators when they take their college entrance exams (ACT/SAT), without which they would be at a severe competitive disadvantage. Many of my students are college-bound and learning to be literate in these tools is an absolute must. Finally, graphing calculators will enable me to give my students more rigorous homework assignments and further encourage greater student engagement with the curriculum. The need for these devices cannot be overstated.
