Growing up, were you bored by the books offered in your school library? Reluctant readers cringe at the thought of selecting a book from the shelf when the titles are outdated and authors unfamiliar. Our students crave current young adult fiction but a dwindling budget prevents new purchases.
Our students live in a small rural community comprised of blue collar families, many of which have yet to see one member go to college.
Instead of being able to fulfill the role of typical teenager, many of our students are forced to work after the school day in order to help support their families. Our school is surrounded by rolling farmlands in a tight knit community. We strive to give our students opportunities that allow them to move beyond the borders of this community in order to be productive members of the global community. 21st century learning strategies are emphasized in all academic situations in or order to give our students the best possible opportunity for success upon graduation.
My Project
Adding Nook e readers as an alternative resource in our library will allow for the purchase and disbursement of titles in greater quantity. Instead of buying 1 copy of a traditional print book, the Nooks will allow us to circulate multiple copies of one title without spending any extra money. In addition, the e-reader device is an enticing tool for reluctant readers who hesitate to select books from the shelves of the library. Ultimately, the Nooks will increase the level of readership in our school and improve the literacy rates of our students.
Budget cuts make it increasingly difficult to provide our students with appropriate and interesting reading material.
Popular books are often checked out and unavailable, making reluctant readers even more hesitant to read when the titles they want are not available. Nook e readers will increase the number of titles available to students and increase the number of readers in our building. Without the support of Donors Choose, we are unable to purchase Nooks through our tiny budget.
