Math is understanding time so we can plan our lives, understanding money so we can buy things, understanding counting so we know how many cookies we should not have eaten, and understanding that we use math every day. My students need materials that can inspire them to explore these facts.
I have fifteen precious, loving, and hungry to learn Kindergarten students.
Our school is Title 1 with over 90% receiving free or reduced lunch. Many of my student do not have their own crayons or pencils at home or parents that speak English who can help them with their homework. When they walk through that classroom door it is my job to teach and inspire them using all that I have until they step on those buses.
My Project
With these shape big books, counting games, number rubbings, magnetic numbers, and sorting trays my students will have a new enthusiasm for math every afternoon. Big books are something my class loves. We read them together and then they can look at them on their own. The fact that these books teach them about shapes, concepts of print they need for reading, and rhyming words makes these books a great teaching tool over more than one subject area. The number rubbings, magnetic numbers, and counting game will make wonderful teaching tools in small groups as well as a fun way for students to review what they've learned independently. We will use the magnetic numbers for placing numbers in counting order, making two-digit numbers, and matching the numbers with objects requiring a crucial understanding of one-to-one correspondence. The number rubbings will be wonderful for my tactile learners and especially those still struggling with number recognition.
My students have very little exposure at home to educational activities and experiences.
These new resources will make for a memorable math experience for all my little kindergartners by appealing to visual and kinesthetic learners as well as auditory, when used in a teacher led activity, and by allowing them to learn mathematics through exploration.
