My Students

Chief Justice Earl Warren notes, "I always turn to the sports section first. The sports section records people's accomplishments; the front page! nothing but man's failures." High school students find sports news much more relevant than other news. That is why they jump at the chance to report it.

My Wisconsin high school has a growing special education population due to our successes in working with students with autism.

I have a number of those students in my classroom right now. In addition, the number of students with learning disabilities grows annually, providing me with challenges and opportunities to teach students. Social challenges make projects difficult, but with the proper tools they can create incredible work. What we lack financially we make up for in innovation. As our growing autism program indicates, students and their parents WANT to come here to learn.

My Project

Buying digital tools presents financial challenges. As class sizes grow and budgets wither, access to 21st century tools slips to the wayside. The Samsung Galaxy Tab puts all the necessary tools to do mobile reporting right into the hands of students - all in a small package. This device will allow students to record video of school events, take photos, AND record interviews to ensure accuracy. Built-in apps will allow for quick editing and even immediate posting to social networks to "get out" the story. Special needs students typically do not do well with assignments like this, but a Samsung Galaxy Tab with video recording and camera features will allow them to gather the basic details of a story. Working in pairs with a regular education student will allow my special needs students to earn their first-ever byline with a comprehensive sports story. The end result is a great story that demonstrates the strengths of both students. Without the Samsung Galaxy Tab, this may never happen.

Opportunity is the key to success when working with special needs students, and we must encourage and motivate them.

This project provides a chance to take advantage of current technology to change the way my students learn. We need to engage them in active, hands-on learning and encourage them to collaborate with others. You can literally alter lives by giving special needs students in my classroom the tools they need to engage with the world. Their first byline could come from you.
