Are you going to sit back and let the world pass you by? For some students, this question is not rhetorical. Rather, it is a harsh reality some face if they do not take the time to read quality literature! On the flip side, this grim outlook can be utilized for positive gain.
My students come from a high-poverty area where education is not always of top priority.
In some cases, my students serve as the responsible head of household. In spite of all this, they are high-achieving and college-bound. They aspire to inspire and they do not take their education for granted. The students I serve yearn for high-quality literature that can be used to prepare them for their future in higher education. They constantly want to be challenged, and in saying that, they require reading materials that will push them to see the big picture-to dig deeper, to think grander, and to discover more.
My Project
The resources your generosity provides will allow my students to think more critically about the world around them, develop literacy skills that will advance them beyond college, and produce the passion for learning that will make them successful in that venture. With the texts, students will be able to harness critical-thinking skills in that they will study how society shapes individuals. In turn, it is the hope that they will use this knowledge to become the future leaders and policy makers of tomorrow. The texts provided with your grant funding will give students the opportunity to question the environment in which they live, critique it when it does not meet their expectations, and speak out on behalf of those who are voiceless. My students will learn how societal forces shape human behavior, how power structures are implemented and maintained, and what they can do to become apart of the solution, not the problem. Beyond that scope, students will cultivate a love for learning.
This project matters most to my students for its ability to provide rich texts.
The books you donate will give students food for thought. They will use these texts to focus on dysfunctional societies, evaluate how those societies influence their citizens, and examine ways in which to change the forces at play. Our class will use the literature you share with us in order to better understand culture, economics, politics, socialization, and the media's influence over the human mind.
