Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My educational philosophy is that every child deserves a quality education, regardless of where he or she grows up. I work in a school in the poorest Congressional district in the country-and severe budget cuts have come down the line for this school year. I teach 6th grade English-Language Arts.
I teach English as a Second Language (ESL) students.
While they are bright and eager to learn, they often struggle with basic skills. Due to a variety of factors, they come to me in September with extremely low reading levels-many are barely on a primer level. They average a 3rd grade reading level-already three years behind! My responsibility is to make sure they quickly make up the years they've lost due to a variety of factors.
My Project
The Fountas and Pinnell literacy intervention system is the creme de la creme of teaching reading: it is extremely accurate and thorough, but it is not cheap. It is a system in which the students and I work together in small groups in order to increase their literacy. If we were able to use this tool in our classroom, my students would make much quicker progress in raising their reading levels. It is comprehensive and research based: this system WILL help close the achievement gap in my classroom, if only we could afford it!
This system would make a world of difference to my classroom and really up the quality of my teaching.
