My Students
Do you remember what it was like the first time you read a book that you couldn't put down? My students have not yet discovered books that capture their imaginations, but they have also not yet met Roald Dahl.
My students are at a Title 1 school where most receive free lunch.
Money is an issue and most do not have access to good children's literature. With their home lives aside, they are the most creative, hard working students I have ever met. All it takes is someone or something to light that spark.
My Project
Receiving these chapter books will give my students an opportunity to learn to LOVE books. Right now, the basal text makes reading for them more like a chore. With different types of books for them to choose from, they will be more engaged and have quality books readily available to them with all of the choices from the 7 different leveled libraries. This assortment of books will give them choices of "just right" books they can read, in order to learn skills that good readers need to know.
Receiving these books from these 7 different leveled libraries will help ignite a reading light in my student's minds.
It is my hope that with these resources, the children I teach this year, and in subsequent years, will leave my classroom with a genuine love for reading.
